Fourteen

The smell of French toast filled the air. Monica opened her eyes and blinked, blinded by the forceful rays of the sun peeking through the shades. As she turned away from the window, she focused on the familiar surroundings. She was in Dray’s bedroom, the sheets were all over the place and she was naked. The after effects of last night’s rendezvous made her smile.

Dray entered the room, bare-chested and all and made his way to the bed. He bent to kiss her but she drew back quickly.

“Morning breath! No.”

“Your breath smells fine. I kissed you when I got up.”

“Oh…”

“Yeah, oh…” Dray kissed her on the nose. “You hungry?”

“Starving.”

“I cooked. Come on and eat.”

“You didn’t have to do that.” Monica threw the covers back.

“Yes, I did.” He took her by the hand and helped her out of bed. “I promise you’ll like it.”

Monica followed him into the kitchen. “Are we still talking about food?”

A smirk crossed his face. “For the moment. Have a seat.”

Monica took a seat at the bar while he went into the kitchen. “It smells delicious.”

“Wait until you taste it.”

“I have already,” she said with a wink.

“Don’t get put on this counter Miss Holiday. I got enough energy for a couple more rounds.”

“So do I.”

“Duly noted.” Dray handed her a plate filled with French toast, eggs and bacon.

“Wow.”

“Did you get an invitation for the party that Big Hits Records is throwing?”

Dray set down two glasses of juice and grabbed his plate. “You mean the one for that singer, Asia? Yeah…you want coffee? I don’t have tea.”

“Juice is fine,” Monica said, taking a sip.

“I think the invitation’s on my desk. It’s this weekend, isn’t it?” Dray asked, sitting beside her.

“Yeah. Friday night. You wanna go?”

“With you?” He sounded surprised.

She misunderstood his tone. “Well if you don’t want to, I understand...”

“Nah, I’m good. Let’s do it…on one condition.”

“What?”

“You don’t wear that damn white dress!”

Monica howled, “Don’t worry, I won’t.”

Monica was waiting outside of the Swiss Hotel for Dray to arrive. He was late, and Monica was growing anxious. Everybody who was anybody on the Atlanta music scene was pulling up at the hotel. Droves of hip-hop gear wearing men and scantily clad women exited luxury vehicles back to back. The scene looked like something out of late nineties rap video and it was getting more and more hectic. Monica hoped Dray wasn’t standing her up. She had tried his cell but it was going straight to voicemail and it was almost ten o’clock.

Monica looked like something out of Vogue magazine. She was dressed in a black leather dress, and strappy stiletto heels that complemented her long. Her hair was flat-ironed bone-straight and fell past her shoulders. She’d even done a swoop over her eye like Aaliyah for good measure and adorned her wrists with a huge gold bangle. She would definitely turn heads tonight, even if one of them wasn’t Dray’s. To hell with him. She went on inside.

The music was loud and the crowd was thick. The annoying sound of Asia’s voice blared from the speakers causing Monica to cover her ears.
